A new so-called mega-jail could change hundreds of thousands of lives in years to come, an expert in offender behaviour has said.

Annette Greenwood, who has run projects for the Probation Service, said the facility could be a ‘crucial’ step for the UK’s criminal justice system.

However she also warned that HMP Five Wells was an ‘experiment’ that would need to take a ‘holistic’ approach to rehabilitation while not being viewed as a soft option by inmates transferred in from other jails.

Run privately by G4S, the facility in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, will feature 16 classrooms, 24 workshops and cells without bars in the windows.

The majority of inmates – who will be called ‘residents’ – will be transferred to the UK’s first purpose-built ‘resettlement’ prison as they prepare for release.

Described as ‘rooms’, the cells have views over the River Nene, while outside those seeing out their time can make use of four football pitches for exercise, a gardening area and a sloping auditorium.

It has earnt the ‘mega-jail’ tag because its maximum capacity of 1,680 inmates will make it one of the biggest jails in England.

Staff – including a manager of religious affairs – are being recruited, with the final phases expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The project – and another new prison at Glen Parva in Leicestershire – are viewed by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) as a ‘step change’ in creating the ‘new prisons of the future’.

Mrs Greenwood said: ‘Within the mega-jail they will have people who will repeat offend as no type of jail is ever going to change that. But if they take the right approach from the start it could change offending behaviour and how the inmates perceive themselves.

‘This is an experiment and with the problems in the prison system over the past 10 years it’s crucial that they get it right this time round.

‘There is a careful balance to be struck as it can’t and should not be a soft option for people who have repeat offending behaviour and have committed serious crimes.

Annette Greenwood said HMP Five Wells will have to run a disciplined regime while helping offenders break the cycle of crime (Picture: Annette Greenwood)

‘It needs to be somewhere where they are helped to think and behave differently but also have the reinforcement in a disciplined way to change those habits that they have had for a very long time.’

Mrs Greenwood’s experience includes working with prisoners at the former Northallerton Jail in North Yorkshire and running projects to help ex-offenders assimilate into society after release.

She said: ‘One woman from a probation drug and alcohol project spotted me in the street and came running over and told me how she had turned her life around. Karen said she had stopped doing drugs and alcohol and got rid of her partner because he was a negative influence, and she had found a job in a local supermarket. People can do it, they just need the right support along the way.

Cells inside the new prison will be known as ‘rooms’ as part of the changes to traditional prison design (Picture: Metro grab)

‘The mega-jail will really have its hands full but if it succeeds it will be a crucial step forward for the prison system that will change hundreds of thousands of lives like Karen’s in years to come.’

The Howard League for Penal Reform last week called for an end to the construction of new prisons, arguing that the running costs could be placed in hospitals, schools, homes, mental health care and other public services.

Chief Executive Frances Crook said: ‘The overly optimistic, and naive, puff is that the prisons will not be crowded but will provide purposeful activity.

‘Yet we know that no prison does currently, nor has any prison ever, provide a full day of purpose and activity. The reality is that running costs are often cut back, staffing is reduced and repairs are not done. Nearly 200 years of the history of prisons is hubris and failure.’

Frances Crook has said building new prisons to create more places is a false economy (Picture: Howard League for Penal Reform)

Mrs Crook said that new prisons and expansions to existing facilities under a £4 billion Government drive to create thousands of new places will simply ‘encourage inflation of the use of prison’.

G4S, which has a £300 million contract to run the all-male, Category C jail, has said the ‘innovative’ facility will give inmates ‘the best chance to secure employment and turn away from crime’.

Five Wells will have dedicated classrooms and workshops for ‘high-quality academic and vocational learning’.

A central hub will be used for educational and vocational work as well as social activities. The aim is for each resident to have a qualification by the time he walks out of the gates.

The prison has been structurally completed on the site of the former HMP Wellingborough, which closed in 2012, with the first inmates due to begin arriving in January 2022. Kier Group, another private company, was awarded the building contract by the MoJ in 2019.

A scene inside HMP Five Wells which is expected to receive its first inmates in early 2022 (Picture: HM Prison Five Wells/Metro grab)

The Government has a long-term plan to upgrade and expand its prison estate, which includes creating 18,000 places by the mid-2020s.

In the next six years, it’s expected that 10,000 of the additional spaces and four new jails will be provided, with expansion at another four jails.

A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: ‘HMP Five Wells and a second new prison at Glen Parva will provide modern facilities that will create a safer, more secure and rehabilitative environment. Overall our £4 billion investment will create 18,000 prison places, ensuring the public is protected and we always meet the demand for places.’

Five Wells is aimed at resettling prisoners who are originally from the surrounding area back into the local community.

A G4S spokesperson said: ‘HMP Five Wells will prepare prisoners for their transition back into society as they approach the end of their sentence.

‘Our aim is for each prisoner to gain a meaningful qualification before they leave custody, so they can be successful in reintegrating the local community and turn away from crime.

‘As well as creating training opportunities with local businesses, the 16 classrooms and 24 workshops within the prison will provide high-quality academic and vocational learning opportunities for the men in our care.’

There is so
much talk about dry January, veganuary, faddy diets, the headache around credit
card bills, sort your debts out, sort your life out! So I’m proposing we all invest in having a FUNANUARY!

FUNANUARY! What
does this mean? It means with all that gloom and doom around and the anti-climax
after Christmas no wonder people don’t like January, and if your mind-set is
around January being a long dreary month then it will be. So instead of having
a downer in January let’s embrace it and have a FUNANUARY.

WHY? Because
it’s the start of a new month of a new year a year that can be created with some
magical moments right at the start.

Take a peek
at my examples below to get your creative juices flowing.

Today I looked out of the window to see daffodils beginning to poke their heads above ground which is a sign of spring on its way. I love spring, new beginnings and longer days.

Do something positive in January. Whether that’s set yourself a new challenge to learn to swim, read a self-help book, write a book, or contact an old friend and arrange to meet up for lunch.

Let go of something that doesn’t serve you anymore. It could be to clutter clear your wardrobe, especially after Christmas, and give away what you don’t wear or even like anymore to charity. Why not have a car boot sale instead and with the money you make put it towards a meal out, have a lovely pamper day, or put it towards paying off your credit card.

Alternatively, change a certain behaviour that you know isn’t working for you anymore and watch your quality of life improve dramatically.

Enjoy nature in January by taking a short walk even on cold snowy days can be beautiful. This can boost your mood and spirits, lifting those dark days.

By committing to changing just one thing it doesn’t matter how small, you will feel the benefits longer term on your life and future happiness. What could be better than that?

So January doesn’t have to be boring or miserable at all it’s up to you to make it exactly the way you want it to be.

Have a fantastic FUNANUARY

Annette X

In this blog
I share how to tackle bullying in the workplace they are all tips that I have
personally used with clients.

Bullying at
work is never acceptable so remember if you are on the receiving it is NOT your
fault ever!

I experienced bullying myself a long time ago when working for a very large company. After I reported it to my manager the company dealt with it swiftly but at the time it was very stressful. The employee involved had been told not to speak to me whilst the investigation was underway so instead they enlisted the help of a friend who would make sarcastic comments quietly so nobody else could hear when walking past, which was in itself intimidating. I was coming through depression so it made things even more difficult.

Fast forward to now and in a much stronger place it would be a whole new ball game. I would certainly deal with it myself effectively and positively having much more life and people experiences under my belt.

If you are experiencing
bullying at work what I would say is please don’t be afraid to seek support or
ask for help as its nothing to be ashamed of.

What Should You Do

Harassment is unlawful under the Equality Act 2010. Bullying and harassment is behavior that makes someone feel intimidated or offended.

Talk to a trusted friend or family member and decide how you want to proceed with taking this to your employer.

Most
companies have anti bullying policies in place so don’t be afraid to use them
it’s the law.

Standing up
to a bully can be empowering. It takes confidence to be able to do this and if
you don’t feel able to then seeking out support to enable you to deal with it
is one positive step you can take.

What I would
say is it’s important to choose what feels for you in terms of personal support.
I have worked with many people who have had work challenges, so if you would
like to discover how coaching could help you to find your voice then please
contact me, always in confidence to find out more.

Let’s Connect: Give me a call or text if you prefer on +44 07743 986840. Always in confidence.

I’m sharing this post to inspire you or someone else you may know.

Excited and humbled I am pleased to announce that I’ve been shortlisted for the Forward ladies & Summit 2019 in the Charity & Social Enterprise category for the Yorkshire region. This an inspirational programme showcasing diversity in business, recognising the doers, trailblazers & inclusive leaders across the UK.

My goal has always been as a trailblazer, standing up for injustice, discrimination towards women or one of my many other passions. Why am I telling you this, well, because I want you to believe that anything is possible, and it is.

Many years ago I used to visualise myself being selected for an award for my first novel Imprisoned Heart. Now this is the great part as in exactly one months time I will be in such a place, as a regional finalist. That dream, that desire that heart focused intention has become real. I imagined that book, I wrote it and now I’m a finalist.

I am genuinely grateful, happy and a little bit tearful all at the same time to be recognised for doing the work that I love.

So, trust, believe, take action then be amazed at your results

Do You live In The Trap of What If?

In this blog I share three tips that really work to help change your mind set. You will learn HOW to see things differently and positively! These are all tips that I personally use and have given me a new perspective on many things with some great results. I guarantee if you are seeing things from the ‘what if’ glass half empty perspective then it won’t take much to shift to the glass is half full.

Sometimes all it takes is another person to see things objectively and I am fortunate and blessed as a life Coach to be able to help other women like you find clarity.

The What If Syndrome!

So, let’s take three everyday examples.

1: What if I leave this job to take another and it all goes wrong, what if I hate it? Change perspective by saying out loud:

What if I leave my current job to take up a new and exciting opportunity. What if I actually love it and learn so much more than I ever could where I am now?

2: What if I move house, hate the area and the people are hostile? Change perspective by saying out loud:

What if I move home, my neighbours are great, I make new friends and build up a completely new supportive network?

3: What if I raise an issues with my partner and they refuse to listen or worse threaten to leave? Change perspective by saying out loud:

What if I share these feelings with my partner in a positive way and offer a solution that works for us both so we can discuss it together?

Now you know HOW simply making a shift in your thinking can take you from feeling stuck to freedom! Remember, like learning any new habit it takes time so please be patient with yourself.

If you would like to learn more how coaching could help you change perspective.

Then why not book your personal FREE 60 minute session.

Just give me a call in complete confidence on 07743 986840 or drop me an email to annette@annettegreenwood.com

Annette X

A life coach who spent much of her early career working with women in prison, has released a gritty and exciting novel, much of which is based on her experience.

Northern woman Annette Greenwood, who is now a personal and intuitive life coach to women, has released her novel Imprisoned Heart on Amazon this week and the book is already selling hand over fist.

Based upon the life of Katrina Sanderson, the plot follows a young woman as she falls foul of the law through no fault of her own whilst trying to provide stability for her family. Including love plots, twist and turns mixed with plenty of laughter and tears, the novel shows how when women are faced with challenges and suffering, their true fighting spirit comes through.

And now Annette is delighted to have finally released her long awaited book, which is being bought by female clients, past prisoners and followers of Annette on social media and the web worldwide. Annette said:

“Writing this novel took twelve months around a full time job, but the following eight years to publication have been the most challenging and rewarding.

“When writing Imprisoned Heart, I adopted the principle of putting myself whole heartedly into each character. I lived them, breathed them and got to know them intimately and through this they came alive, especially the main character Katrina Sanderson, who I am especially fond of because she has so much of me in her.”

Over the last eight years, Annette has undergone a number of challenges in her life, more recently nearly losing her husband John, who miraculously survived a serious illness. She has also experienced the loss of her beloved mother and brother in quick succession and a number of traumatic changes to her working life.

Prior to that Annette has suffered from sever depression and anxiety. She found conventional treatments unhelpful, and found Adaptation Practice, a radically different approach that helped her turn her life around. She in turn is now helping other women do the same from her coaching practice in Yorkshire.

Annette believes that by releasing her novel, she is showing the world, and the women in it, that if you have a goal it can be achieved despite negative circumstances. Annette concluded:

“Following a turbulent personal life and career, I now live a much simpler life that is settled, so it seemed the perfect time to release my book. I hope my open heart will inspire others to overcome adversity.

“The purpose of this novel is to encourage women to trailblaze. To be who they know they can be, not listen to naysayers, doubt or fear. Face the world, be proud and follow their own true North even if it seems scary! I hope this novel touches the life and the heart of millions of women, the same way it did for me when I was writing it.”

In this blog I share five steps to have a healthy menopause and lift your mood. They are all tips that I have personally used with great results as having had depression at the same time as going through the menopause it was a double whammy! So if you are struggling right now I can empathise. Please don’t be afraid to seek support or ask for help as its nothing to be ashamed of. In fact it was during this time I trained as a life coach having realised how I could help other women going through their own life challenges. I even had a coach myself and found her support invaluable as she understood, didn’t judge and helped me find a way forward.

My Top Tips

1.Exercise:

When you are going through the menopause it is likely that you will feel stressed, you may even find yourself putting on weight. Exercise is key to combating both of these problems, as it releases endorphins that boost mood and it burns off any extra pounds.

This changes all the time but as a rule it is recommended people get 30 minutes of moderate exercise on most days of the week. This could be walking, swimming or biking. Wonderful strengthening exercise like yoga or tai chi which also restores balance and calm to the body though breathing exercises, poses and meditation. You should be able to find either Tai Chi or of yoga for beginners’ classes in your local area, and remember it is never too late to give it a try

2.Nutrition:

Excite your taste buds and your diet with fruit, vegetables, whole grains and lean meats which give you lots of the vitamins and nutrients you need to keep your body working at its best. I love adding blueberries, brazil nuts and oily fish like salmon to my diet. If you are considering becoming vegetarian or vegan ensure you are getting the right balance of foods. If you want to make radical changes check with your GP if you have existing health issues. What worked for me is little steps often which led to small changes and that made a positive difference.

3 Sleep:

The menopause can be a very stressful time. It is important to get enough rest and time to repair. If you’re struggling to sleep because of hot flushes, make sure you do all you can to relax the body and prepare for bed. Try to relax before bed time by turning off computers, and wind down gently when you can. It can be difficult with family time or work life balance but even sitting quietly for just ten minutes before bed can benefit you.

4 Alternative therapies:

Many women find alternative therapies are great for getting through the menopause. Although there is no one size fits all I recommend both acupuncture and homeopathy. Having used them myself I had very positive results. I didn’t use HRT but that was a personal choice and I had the support of acupuncture instead.

Acupuncture encourages the body’s own natural healing, promoting physical and mental wellbeing, aiming to treat the root cause of the issue not just the symptom. What I would say is choose what feels right to support you as that is the most important thing.

5.Goals and challenges:

It’s great to try something new and expand your brain. Set yourself a new goal or challenge. Learn Zumba, a new language, consider training in massage, or volunteering, brainstorm some ideas then have fun trying them out!

The menopause is a new door opening. If you would like to discover how coaching could benefit you in helping make some positive life changes you will love, then contact me to book your FREE session and find out more.
